Concrete Stairs & Steps in Calumet City & Chicagoland
Front steps, back steps and stoops poured with even risers, solid footings and a finish that does not get slick.
What we do
Concrete Stairs & Steps
Steps are the piece of concrete most likely to hurt somebody when they go wrong. Uneven risers, a stoop pulling away from the house or a slick tread are all worth fixing properly.
We pour new stairs and replace failing ones, with footings taken below the frost line so the flight does not settle away from the door it serves.
What we build
- Front entrance steps and stoops
- Back and side door steps
- Basement and areaway stairs
- Replacement of settled or crumbling flights
- Landings tied into a new walkway
Why Sammson
What you get out of it
Even risers
Every step in the flight is the same height, which is what stops the missed footing at the top.
Footings below frost
Stairs settle when they sit on shallow fill. The footings go deep enough that they do not.
Tied to the landing
The flight and the stoop are poured to work together instead of drifting apart over a few winters.
A tread you can trust
Treads are finished for traction and edges are tooled so they do not chip off under a shovel.
How we work
How the job runs
Seven steps, in this order, every time. Skipping any of them is where concrete jobs go wrong.
On-site assessment
We come out, measure the area, look at drainage and at how the existing concrete has failed, and talk through what you want. You get a written quote with no obligation.
Removal of the old slab
When there is old concrete in the way, we break it out and haul it off. Nothing new gets poured on top of a slab that is already failing.
Grading and base prep
We grade the sub-base for slope and drainage and compact the stone underneath. In Chicagoland this is the step that decides whether the slab survives the freeze-thaw cycle.
Forming and reinforcement
Forms go in to hold the shape and the edges you asked for, straight or curved, with reinforcement sized to what the slab has to carry.
The pour
Concrete goes in, gets screeded and floated, and control joints are cut where the slab is meant to crack so that it does not crack anywhere else.
Finish and seal
Broom finish for grip, or a stamped pattern and colour if that is what you chose. Decorative work is sealed to protect the colour.
Clean-up and cure
We clean the site before we leave and tell you exactly how long to stay off it and how to look after it through the first winter.
What customers say
What customers said
Stamped patio, custom shape
A homeowner asked for a stamped patio in a custom octagonal shape. Sammson built it to that shape, kept them informed about the pour, the colour and the sealing as the work went on, and left the site clean at the end.

Questions we get asked
Before you call
Can you match my existing steps?
Usually, yes — we match rise and run and the general look. If the existing risers are uneven, we will tell you, because copying that is not doing you a favour.
Can you add a railing?
We set the anchors for a railing in the pour when you ask for it, so the railing installer has solid fixings to work with.
My stoop is pulling away from the house. Is that repairable?
It means the fill under it has settled. That is a replacement with proper footings, not a patch — a patch on a moving stoop opens up again.
